Markfield sits on the edge of The National Forest & The Charnwood Forest and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book under the name of Merchenefeld. A variation of this is still used as the name of the village primary school Mercenfield.

The village has a population of just under 4,500, a range of shops along the Main Street and on Chitterman Way. There is a small industrial estate at the top of Ashby Road.

The Community Centre was built in 1985 and has recently been improved and extended to provide for the local community. The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation Charity is based on the edge of the village. Tomlinson’s Boarding Kennels & Canine Centre, including a hydrotherapy centre, can spoil your pooch while you are away.

The M1 motorway can be accessed both north and south from Junction 22 which is only a few minutes’ drive from any point in the village.

The existence for many years of the quarry near the village is reflected in the large number of properties either built entirely of stone or with strong stone and granite features.

Thornton Reservoir is a popular tourist attraction with a sculpture trail that leads through the woodland, an information centre, picnic tables and a fishing lodge that serves light refreshments.
